This thesis delves into the complex soil ecology of Santa Clara Valley, capturing the dynamic relationship between human activities and the soil ecosystem. The project explores ecological impacts of urbanization, industrialization, and land-use changes on soil biodiversity and ecosystem services. It also investigates the cultural perceptions and values influencing environmental attitudes and practices, advocating for sustainable, harmonious relationships between humans and soil.

Thesis Statement:

This book project explores soil ecology in Santa Clara Valley, using photography, design, and narratives to emphasize the need for sustainable soil management to safeguard the future.

Research Questions:

Question 1: 
How does Santa Clara Valley's soil ecology support its local biodiversity and ecosystems?

Question 2:
In what ways can design raise awareness about soil health and promote sustainable practices in Santa Clara Valley?

Question 3:
What are the cultural and philosophical perspectives on the significance of soil in human life?

Outcome:

By designing this book, I deepened my understanding of soil science and Santa Clara County's land use history, while learning the process of book creation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
