This thesis aims to explore depression through a visual novel, delving into the struggles faced by individuals with this condition. It centers on crafting a compelling narrative following a college student's journey through depression, aiming to authentically mirror internal struggles. The research involves understanding depression's psychological aspects, drawing from trusted sources and mental health professionals. Additionally, it delves into visual and environmental elements, using cues and motifs to convey the protagonist's mental state. Through color, symbolism, and design, the goal is to evoke the profound impact of depression.
Research Questions:
Question 1:
How do you show the problems of someone with depression through the environment around them?
Question 2:
What are some of the behaviors that correlate to people with depression?
Question 3:
What are the common coping strategies recommended by professional therapists?
Outcome:
I’m hoping people will be able to identify, at minimum, the more obvious signs of depression in someone, or themselves, and proceed to take appropriate actions in order to help either themselves or those around them.
