Cultural Ties

I personally never felt really that connected to my culture. The only way I was really connected was the cuisine. This thesis will do an analysis on Filipino dishes and the original dishes that Filipinos took inspiration from, Spain and China. While looking at these dishes, we take a look at how they are similar and how they claim a dish to be theirs. In the process of exploring these, traditional cookbook design will be tested. Cookbooks are always seen as a big object, but what about challenging the size?

Thesis Statement:

This thesis will explore how Filipino dishes showcase the historical relationship between China and Spain and go over Filipino culture claims a dish through the creation of an interactive cookbook. This challenges the traditional design that most cookbooks have.

Research Questions:

Question 1:
What defines the dishes to be similar to each other?

Question 2:
How can food dishes be a gateway to learning the historical relationship between two countries?

Question 3:
How can the creation of a publication help tell this story in different ways?

Outcome:

I feel way more connected to my culture than before. I learned more in terms of the origins of our food and how it adds onto our culture.
