Typographic Monomyth

Storytelling comes in many forms, and different creatives utilize their own unique way of telling a story. A filmmaker uses a camera while a painter uses a brush. Writers, their words, and dancers, their bodies. What do graphic designers use, and how can we convey a story in a way that is unique to graphic design? A story that is visualized through typography, layout, and space.

Thesis Statement:

The hero’s journey is a universal narrative structure that has been used in storytelling for decades. Inspired by the video game journey, and the hero’s journey in literature, typographic monomyth is a book that explores the themes and concepts of storytelling, through experimental typographic form.

Research Questions:

Question 1:
How do we utilize typography as form and image?

Question 2:
How can thematic or narrative concepts be conveyed through typographic form?

Question 3:
How do we develop a visual language through typography?

Outcome:

Introduce the audience to narrative concepts in storytelling, and to showcase the beauty of typography.
